Classic Apple Pie

Learn how to make classic apple pie at home — the all-American dessert everyone loves. This popular treat is eaten on holidays, at special events, and just for fun any day of the week. Serves 6-8, and it's best presented with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I guarantee this will impress your friends and family.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 125g soft flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 30g icing sugar
  • 62g cold butter
  • 1 egg
  • 30g water (start with less, add more as needed)

Apple Filling

  • 2-3 Granny Smith apples
  • 1/4 lemon
  • 1 egg
  • 50g white sugar
  • 30g flour
  • 25g butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Directions

  1. Mix dry ingredients for the crust (sugar, salt, flour), then add butter. Add half the cold water, mix, then gradually add the rest until the dough comes together.
  2. Cut off 1/3 of the dough, flatten and place in a bag, then freeze for 15 minutes.
  3. Peel and cube the apples.
  4. Melt the butter (1 minute in the microwave) and mix cinnamon with sugar to avoid lumps.
  5. Combine sugar-cinnamon mix and melted butter with the apples, add a squeeze of lemon juice, mix well, then stir in the remaining flour.
  6. Roll out the larger portion of dough (about 2-3cm thick) on a floured surface and press into your tin. Chill again for 15 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 180°C/360°F.
  8. Whisk an egg for egg wash. Roll the smaller dough portion thinner (about 1cm) and cut into 6-8 strips for a lattice top.
  9. Fill the pie with the apple mixture, brush the edges with egg wash, and arrange the lattice strips over the top.
  10. Brush the entire top with more egg wash for a golden finish. Bake 45-60 minutes (timing varies by oven) until deeply golden.
